S.T.E.M. Fun

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics

STEM FUN provides students with the opportunity to explore combinations of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math using real world applicatinos and hands on activities. Projects throughout this series will encourage students to work together through podcasting, making movies, and writing music. They will also be introduced to computer programming and learn how to program their own video games. At the end, students will present their projects to friends and family at the STEM Fair.

Parents are encouraged to attend and to bring iPhones or iPads. There is no cost associated with this series. The instructors are parent volunteers, Amanda Stock and Crecia Orsello.

ELEMENTARY SPANISH

For grades K-5

We will be learning many common Spanish words through:

DANCE

This series of eight classes is designed to introduce your child to the Art of Dance through the development of rhythm, movement, and creative expression.

Clothing Requirements

  • Students may wear simple t- shirts and shorts, biker shorts, leggings, or dance wear. No zippers or buttons (elastic waist for easy movement).
  • Shoe wear: tennis shoes and socks OR ballet slippers or soft jazz oxfords. A hard-soled shoe (tied or w/ strap) or a simple low- heeled tap shoe can be used for our tap/ rhythm exploration.

JUDO

Open to students age 9+ / parents / staff

The seminar is intended as a safe environment for learning about Judo body movements and postures that can help attain physical balance and control, make movements more effective, develop proprioception, volume awareness (zanchin), project a positive stance, allay bullying, avoid conflicts, and be a source of self-confidence for boys and girls.

Demonstrations and live participation by all (as wanted), no mat. No athletic form is required, wear comfortable clothing, people with physical disabilities are welcome. The seminar will not include physical contact, ground work or falls.

LEGOS

Grades K-6 have fun building and creating together with Legos. Parental attendance for grades K-3 is preferred. Each week there will be a different theme to design. Thanks to parents Crecia Orsello and Judy Neynaber for heading up this activity!

LEGO DONATIONS would be very much appreciated - new or used - for our students to use and share. If you're able to donate Legos, please bring them to the front office. Reward: High Fives!

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE

This ASL series will be held on Thursdays, from January 23 through March 13 in the Parent Room:

. Grades K-5: 10:00 - 10:30 am
. Grades 6-12: 10:45 am - 12:00 pm (for secondary students, please plan to attend all the classes, as each lesson builds on the next one)

MEA parent, Mrs. Loura Cote, is teaching American Sign Language (ASL) as part of our Guest Lecturer Series! Generally ASL is used by individuals who are Deaf and those who communicate with them, however it is also used by those who may be hearing but non-verbal. This is a wonderful, expressive language!

Loura Cote has a minor in Deaf Studies and has been actively involved in the Deaf community. She wants to help those that are interested in learning this language have a great first experience!

There is no cost associated with this series, and no sign-ups are needed. Parents are encouraged to attend.

ENGINEERING / ROBOTICS

Grades: 5-9
Fridays (except Turn-in Friday)
12:00 - 1:30 pm
Start date: Friday, November 8

Students are introduced to engineering mechanics, learning about levers, gears, motors, and other mechanical elements. They are also introduced to programming; learning to program structures, with graphical programming as well as command line programming. Students will use the new Lego Mindstorm kits, and get a chance to build a real, working robot! Programming will be done on a credit-card sized computer called a Raspberry Pi.
