Physical Education Grade 10

Syllabus

First, some important monthly links:
PE SECONDARY MONTHLY COVER SHEET
4-week Part 1 Physical Activity Log
3-week Part 1 Physical Activity Log
Weekly (One-Week-Per-Page) Part 1 Physical Activing Log

You must do THREE things every month for this physical education course.

PART 1: PHYSICAL ACTIVITY LOG

Actually do (and report on a log) physical activity that meets the Physical Education standards, such as: Playing an organized sport (such as soccer, softball, ice skating), taking lessons (such as gymnastics, karate...), certain professional activities (such as ballet), and planned activity that increases physical endurance or strength (such as regular running or weight lifting) can count as physical activity for this requirement. Things that DO NOT COUNT are walking the dog, playing pick-up baseball in a lot down the street, riding a bike or skateboarding for fun (unless it involves hours of hard aerobic exercise). NOTE: there must be at least 200 minutes of appropriate physical activity every week (about 3 1/2 hours), and the log must be verified (signed) by a parent, coach, or other responsible adult (signing the cover sheet suffices). If the adult signature is not on the cover sheet (or on the log pages), the log earns zero credit.

There are various types of logs available (see the top of this webpage); however, you may use any type of log that clearly shows what activity you did, what day you did it, and how long you spent doing it.

REMINDER: The log is only considered valid if a parent or teaching adult (such as a coach) signs the cover sheet verifying that the physical activity did indeed take place. Without that signature, Part 1 is a zero (F) grade, regardless of the amount or type of physical activity shown on the log.

PART 2: REFLECTION ESSAY

Write an essay reflecting on how the physical activity in the first requirement has helped you improve physically. You can include difficulties you faced, things you plan to change...whatever makes sense---and will make sense to your teacher. This essay needs to be 150-200 words, but remember that the minimum (150) is only a C- grade. An A grade in any course means you have gone above and beyond the minimum, and done it well, so if you want to earn an A on the essay, write more than 200 words, and make it a quality essay--well-written with good information. THIS MUST BE TYPED.

PART 3: CONTENT ASSIGNMENT

FOR FIRST SEMESTER:

(Month 1, September, through Month 5, January), you have two choices. Take your pick from one of these:

CHOICE 1: Do the worksheet that is provided for month 1. The worksheets are available at the end of this line. If you do this option, make sure you write your answers thoughtfully, with detail and clear explanations.
Month 1    Month 2    Month 3   Month 4   Month 5

CHOICE 2: Do a research report. If you decide to do this, then follow the directions for the 2nd Semester Content Assignment, in the next paragraph. It's your choice of which method to use.

FOR SECOND SEMESTER:

(Month 6, February, through Month 10, June), you must do a research report on a physical education topic of your choice. You have two ways to do the research report; it's your choice which way you want to do it. Take your pick from one of these:

RESEARCH REPORT METHOD 1: Follow the directions on the Part 3 Handout. These things you must know if you choose to do this:

  • Make sure all your answers are in complete sentence form, and are thoughtful, complete, and well-written.
  • You must use a minimum of TWO SOURCES. If they are internet webpages, make sure you give the entire link (URL) of the websites you use, not just the home page URL. For instance, if you are researching treatments for leukemia, you might find this website: http://www.webmd.com/cancer/tc/leukemia-treatment-overview. If you just put www.webmd.com as the URL on your paper, you have just lost all credit for that source. The source only counts if what you write down will allow me to go directly to the website where you found your information about the topic.
  • Don't miss any of the questions that you have to answer at the bottom of the page.
  • Be especially thoughtful about why you trust. In fact, if you ever use any wikipedia webpage, make sure you find the same or similar information somewhere else, because wikipedia is known for not having control over the information that is available there.

RESEARCH REPORT METHOD 2: A one-page or more topical research paper, typed. Topics can be anything having to do with physical education, such as nutrition, sports medicine/injuries, exercise, research about individual sports. If uncertain that a particular topic is appropriate, check with the teacher. You must provide at least two resources showing where you found your information.

REQUIREMENTS for the topical research paper:

  • typed.
  • double-spaced.
  • font size no larger than 12 pt.
  • one full page minimum (90% of the page is considered close enough). You are welcome to write more than one page.
  • at least two sources.

NOTE 1: If you use a webpage as a source, you must provide the entire link to the exact page(s) you used. Do not just use the main URL. For instance, if you find something on wikipedia, do not put http://wikipedia.com. That does not count. Instead, an entire URL will have the subpages so I can go to the exact page you use, such as:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulled_hamstring#Treatment

NOTE 2: Choose a different topic each month.

NOTE 3: Remember that this is to be YOUR work, not copied. Copied work--from a website, a friend, or anything--is cheating. Following our school's Academic Honesty Policy, an incident of cheating results in a zero grade for that assignment. A repeat violation of the honesty policy results in failure of the course. Therefore, research for information, but write your essay in your own words. If you want to use something exactly as it is written in a source, that is allowed if you give direct credit to the source, either in your writing or following MLA style rules.
